Hi
Need some help on getting from Empangeni to vaal dam, never driven this route before so don't know if I should go via Pongola, Piet Retief or via Viehied, Vrede
will be leaving Thursday afternoon so will be driving a few hours into the night.
Which is the better route to take will be in a polo vivo so have to watch out for pot holes.

Don't think I will save much on time as it is the longest in KM and have all the tolls then as well.

Re: Empangeni to Vaal Dam
Hi
In my opinion you got the colour of the two routes just spot on
The Pongola highway is really neat and smooth and can be driven faster
cons are that in Km the pongola route is longer and most probably will take
you a bit longer to drive and there are toll gates at Ermelo on this route,
but the road is much "flatter"
The route via Vryheid is not in the best of conditions and you will find
potholes on this route. There are also way more trucks on this road.
One nice thing about this route is that it is slightly more scenic over the
Melmoth pass - but not too safe to drive at night
Hope that helps
