Sorry for giving y'all a scare with the quake...
Age gets to us all. SWAMBO and I aren't all that busy anymore, but when we do the funky chicken folks down in Durbs also feel the earth move.

Evidently the epicentre was between 6 to 12km South of Orkney and about 10km deep. I've also received some info that some houses collapsed in Orkney :shifty: :shifty:

Ja dit klink my in Orkney is daar skade. En meeste van ons het nie versekering hiervoor nie. As dit myn verband is, is dit gewoonlik uitgesluit.

Re: Earthquake
I was quietly minding my business here at work when all hell let loose! I have never, ever, experienced anything like this before. Foolishly, after the lights went off within a few seconds, I stared at my computer dancing a jig on its desk and just grabbed it to steady it, while watching the window glass behind it, expecting it to shatter. After about 40 seconds, the rumbling just carrying on and on and on, I figured it just might be wise to leave everything and get out of the building!
The epicentre is apparently just 15km from here outside Orkney, just across the Vaal River. I have two cottages at the Vaal Reefs Boating Club and according to the map, the epicentre was 3km from them. Haven't been out there to check yet but my nephew has shot through to look at things.
Our electricity (the whole of Klerksdorp was off) was restored about 20 minutes ago.
There have been reports so far of three houses having totally collapsed at Stilfontein, also some 15km from the epicentre. My home is OK, I shot home to check on it. Some items here and there had fallen but no apparent damage to anything that I could see. Just quite an amount of dust that had fallen through from where the ceiling edges on the wall.

Re: Earthquake
Weird thing so far is the fact that the aftershocks have been very mild - we have experienced far stronger aftershocks with much smaller tremors before. There were still parts of town without power earlier today, don't know if this is sorted out yet.
Unfortunately, it is always the under-privileged who suffer the most and they are the ones without insurance - although I am not sure insurance would cover this anyway. But the NW Government has stepped in and promised to assist those who suffered loss on a case by case basis, but it is still very traumatic for them. How the loss of life remains at only one person is simply a miracle - I really expected many more to have being seriously injured.

Re: Earthquake
Maybe in this case the original quake release most of the stresses hence the reason for no after shocks. Don't actually know why they call it an aftershock as it's not a wave in the crust of the earth that ripple back, it's just another quake due to the stresses that now shifted to another spot and then being released.Family_Dog wrote:Weird thing so far is the fact that the aftershocks have been very mild - we have experienced far stronger aftershocks with much smaller tremors before.
