Hilux V6 Decatted
Decided to do the decat thing.
My reasons included the age of the bakkie (2005) - I was worried about the state of the cat's - and the fact that opening up the exhaust a little should make the bakkie breathe a bit better, hopefully adding a bit of power. Any consumption gains would be a bonus, but that was not the main motivating factor.
So Saturday morning early I was off to Supaquick in Menlyn Pretoria and after a quick discussion with PG the bakkie was on the ramp and Jacob had the cutting torch ready.
The brief was to cut off the two rear cats and replace them with straight pipes, remove the material in the two front cats (but leave the cannisters intact), add two mini-cats to keep the ECU happy (although probably not needed for a 2005 model) and to re-do the bend of the exhaust around the transfer case to increase ground clearance. The rear section of the exhaust, including the rear muffler, was left untouched.
I thought that I would take a few pictures and share it with those contemplating something similiar.
The process took 2 hours exactly and cost R2250.00 all-in.
I am very satisfied with the quality of the work done by Supaquick and the service rendered by PG and can recommend them to anyone.
So what is the effect?
Probably difficult to quantify precisely as each bakkie will be different (e.g. mine is chipped and has a lot of heavy hardware bolted to it), but here is my impressions -
- the condition of the cat material was still good so any concerns with it having become clogged over time / distance (151 000km) was unfounded. It was also still secure in it's housings and not loose.
- the bakkie has a slight increase in exhaust tone and the "rawness' thereof, but nothing to write home about.
- it feels as if the engine does breathe and rev more easily.
- there is a noticable increase in power accross the rev range but nothing earth-shattering.
- I have not yet compared fuel consumption, which is only something i do on long trips, so that will come later.
Additional benefits, I believe, is a cooler exhaust. I still remember vividly the picture of the burnt-out Vigo that got stuck on a dune in Namibia and I have heard that cats raise the exhaust temperature significantly.

The Mini- cats is the expensive bit, not the actual fabrication.JamesC wrote:Ouch! Supaquick in Potch charges R250 (excluding mini cats)

Re: Hilux V6 Decatted

Hallo Dirk, my bakkie is 'n 2006 model.

Re: Hilux V6 Decatted
I cleaned out the front cats this afternoon. DIY job between 3 and 5 o'clock. Sounds different but I'll get used to it. Can't wait to get it on the open road...
Pick shows some of the internals. Wear the PPE and don't get it on your skin, this stuff itches like hell!!

Hi David,
I'd speak to Rodney at Powerflow Bellville. He decatted my bakkie about 5 years ago. I've never had a issue with the engine light coming on.
