1994 Hilux 5th Gear

Post by LouisZ »

Just run this past you.

2 Days ago driving happy in 5th gear on the highway, then all of a sudden at +/- 100km/h the revs jumps high and nothing.

It seems if 5th gear disappeared?

Well it is in now and a gearbox place. I have to hear what it is.

As I understand the 5th gear is the weakest link in the SFA gearbox... it sits quite high up and if the oil level is not at optimum level it does not always get oil.

I think it's the Ali3ns pinching all the 5th gears for their rocket retro-boosters.

Hi Louis,
Some advise, don't just accept price's given to overhaul that gearbox, they are not that expensive to overhaul, one must shop around, I have just helped a friend with his SFA's gearbox, cost him R3800 in parts including input and cluster shaft (new). Overhauled my SFA's gearbox a year ago, cost me R2400 all bearings, needle rollers and seal/gasket set. There are complete centre portions available on the market for R6500, you only need yours casings.

As Tony said, usually the retaining circlip on the 5th gear brakes, no other damage is usually caused, only the hassle of removing the gearbox and replacing the circlip (retaining clip).

Good luck with the repairs, shout if you need further assistance.

I phoned a bit around. There is better prices but then some only give a warranty of 3 to six months. I going to get it done at the original place, the offer a year warranty and the lowered the price.
