first was the Yamaha RZ50.
I WORKED to get the deposit together, and my mom paid the installments.
First car was an old Fiat 124 Special. John mine was rear wheel drive though. Dad gave it to me ... later sold it to my sister, and then later bought it back again ...

Re: What was your first ever vehicle, and who bought it?
My first car was a Golf I 2-door with 2.0l 16V GTi motor, TNT exhaust system, 268 & 276 cams from Hyperformance in CT to create same sea level altitude , 15" mags, leather seats and dyno tuned by DASTEK.
Broke 15 seconds on Tarlton and biggest monthly fine was R5 000 when I was caught 155km/h in 60 zone ... sold it when I go a 318i company car at BMW.
The guy who bought it from me sold it to pay a R17 000 fine when he was caught 191km/h in Zambezi ...
It took me 1 year, two months, 9 days and R42 000 to built the Golf from scratch. Paid for it by means of weekend work while being a student

Koos, didn't '58 Beetles come with the larger window at the back? Or did that come out later?
Whatever, a Beetle was an exceptional car in its time, I wish I had one even now! ;)

Re: What was your first ever vehicle, and who bought it?
My first vehicle - Honda MB50 bought by my dad in 1993 (Standard 9), red lined it every day all day and it kept going - top speed almost 100km/h (but with a long downhill and back wind 100km/h was almost possible) - was harassed daily by cops ( I think they could not comprehend a black kid in the township on a bike, )
By Matric 1994 (La Salle College - Discovery, Roodepoort) I had got a job in a travelling agent doing admin work in the week, collecting Pick 'n Pay shopping trolleys at Southgate on weekends, sold the 50 and got a Honda CB750, now that was cool and was very fast. Did a couple of rallies and belonged to a club called Eagles in Soweto.
1997 - started my appieship City Council of Jhb and bought a 1986 Toyota Corolla 1.3L 4 speed 50kW (very hard to break) 2E motor. Bought from my cousin for R6000, took a year to fix, got full comprehensive insurance and a Tracker nogal, Drove it for +- 4 years no problems, taxi smashed into it and insurance paid out R12000, which was the deposit for my 1990 Gli TwinCam (still have it and at most drive it about four times a year) - completely refurbished and very cherished (celebrating 21 years 28 November 2011)

1969 Cortina 1600 Super. Prys R1150. Nogal goudkleurig met bree bande. Bande en rims was bietjie swaar, so hy kon nie "spin" wanner ek wegtrek nie. Self gekoop en betaal met geld wat ek gespaar het van my salaris in 1972. Soek nog vir foto's.

Eric, Must be that they had a transission in that year, also saw the model with the bigger rear window, but both still with the side-arm indicators. I sold it to a petrol attendant for R261-11, actually R250-00 plus R11-11 fuel extra after I filled up and found that there was a massive increase in petrol price (late 70's) and as a student we never followed the news. It was just unaffordable and put me back on my feet!

Re: What was your first ever vehicle, and who bought it?
my 1st car was the 1.3 Ford Escort 4 door rear wheel drive 1979, that looked like the legendary 1600 Sport. My dad helped me to buy it, I think it was because he had at the time the 1600 Sport. I did not have much of a choice. It use to be a goverment car, in good condition though. It managed to survive my youth. After 3 years my dad bought it from me when I upgraded to the Qonquest and he drove it for another 13 years, not bad for a Ford hey.

1978 Datsun Stanza SSS - metallic gold (hmmm). Grandma used it to drive to the post-office where she worked - gravel road only. Had more rattles than anything I've ever driven. Had that beeper when it was in reverse (which was top-left. First gear bottom-left).

Re: What was your first ever vehicle, and who bought it?
First car was a red Alfa 33 1500cc Flat 4... was an excellent car while it was running, more often than not it was my tickering that caused the many issues I had with it. Cost R11000, which my dad assisted with, I had to pay him back! My 33 was written off in an accident with a Datsun 120Y... as if that wasn't bad enough, my second car was another Alfa 33... we stripped everything that worked off the old one to fit on the new one!

I Bought a Jetta 1 GLS from my grand mother in 1995 for R2500. The car was really bad, but i loved it, and eventually re-sprayed it and fixed up all the dents.

'n Opel Kadet Cub 1300.
My pa het dit vir my gekoop. Ons het R5000 darvoor betaal, maar ons het uiteindelik R13000 daarop spandeer om die ding te laat loop voor ek dit verkoop het.

Re: What was your first ever vehicle, and who bought it?
Saw this and had to add my mine...
Although not owned by myself, the first car I was allowed to drive was a 1979 Ford F100, one of the last with the square lights.
My dad bought it when I was 17 and together we spent months rebuilding it from scratch and eventually installed a GM 6.2 Liter diesel into it - could roll up the tar in all 3 gears If ever you meet my dad, don't tell him I this lol.
I can still see us in the kitchen playing Rock, Paper or Scissors in the morning to see who got to drive it to work or school.
After Matric I bought a 1994 Opel Monza Gsi which myself and my dad again rebuilt again and I enjoyed many years of happy kilometers.

All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, to make it possible.

Re: What was your first ever vehicle, and who bought it?
Opel Kadett 1.3 GL, I think it was a 1981 model.
But...I had the luxury of enjoying a true masterpiece at the age of 18, my dad inherited a 1970 Mercedes Benz 280SE, a maroon one. Damn, I loved that car, for a 1970 model, it had airconditioning, power steering, leather seats, automatic gearbox etc, full luxury. One of my friends also appreciated old cars, so we used to take it out on a Sunday afternoon drive almost every weekend. Club together to get R20 bucks for fuel money (@R1 a litre in 1993!), it was a 2.8 litre straight after all!

My eerste voertuig was n Nissan 1400 bakkie in 2002. Dit was my studente voertuig. En met hom het ek die hele land plat gery. Ekt maklik vir n naweek 800km huis toe gery. Het met daardie bakkie party keer gery waar 4x4bakkies gery het. 2 Sandsakke op sy gat en hy loop enige plek.

Re: What was your first ever vehicle, and who bought it?
1973 Ford F100: "Bought" it from my dad in 2002 for a family discount, overhauled engine (must have had 400k km at that time) and had a hell of a good time with the truck especially on gravel roads.
Traded it back in for a 2001 Nissan 1400 for my studies in Cape Town. Probably travelled the 1500 km between Windhoek and Cape Town more than 15 times. But long distances were only possible because I had removed the standard bench and fitted Toyota Condor rear seats, which were also collapsible and allowed for storage underneath and behind the seats.
Traded the Nissan for my Hilux.
Bought my first motorcycle 1993 Kawasaki KLX650 in 2010. But I'm in the process of selling it again for various reasons...
Bought the Ford F100 back last year, still in very good shape, but clutch and possibly gearbox need attention.

Re: What was your first ever vehicle, and who bought it?
Well, to be honest; I wouldn't be able to say no to most of the old Fords either. My mom had a Cortina, my aunt a Ford Escort Mark 2; unfortunately both were sold before I was old enough to drive. At least I was able to get the F100 back (see my post above).GI Jane wrote:Just to make Thys a bit happier, I used to be a biiiig Ford fan, that was when it was a REAL Ford, drove Anglia panel van, cortina, and finally a Sierra which my son kindly wrote off when he wrapped it around a tree..

Re: What was your first ever vehicle, and who bought it?
Had a good old fashioned VW Beetle, 1973 model with the silver cups under the door handle.
Had it re-sprayed to a dark metallic red and had mat black bumpers.
Removed the seats and the old ford escort seats fitted perfect.
Mine still had the original leather with built in Radio, that was it just a radio, not even an 8 track....
Awesome car... I loved it, and would love to buy another one....

In 1976 I bought a 1972( i think) Opel Kadet fast back 2 door. I paid for it with my own money, R900.00. I managed to roll it one weekend while I was in the army, too much juice and very cleaverat that stage of my life.

1992. Opel Kadett. Auction. Birchmores. R2000.
Sold it 2 weeks later for 2500.
Those two weeks cured me of Opel FOR LIFE.
Bought a brown beetle, "Manfred The Demon Turd".
Drove like one too.
Best memories from those days in that Beetle!

Renault 5 TS hatchback. All sorts of surfing stickers on it, beautiful! Took it over from my Sister, unwanted gift from my parents - it was too ugly for a student at Tuks..
