Re: The fuel consumption of my Hilux

I can understand that the guys with the chips / intercoolers may get a better consumption, is there somebody that can cast some light on the consumption for a std KZ?
Vehicle: 2001 Hilux KZ-TE d/c 4x4
Km's on the clock: 275 000km
Motor: Original
Vehicle lift/ suspension: Original (Only Safari Gabriels added)
Tyres: BFG A/T 30x9.5xR15
Carb mod/ spacers?:
Air filter: GUD
Snorkel?: No
EFI?: No
Cam cut0?: No
Exhaust mod?: No
Tyre Type & Size?:BFG A/T 30x9.5xR15
Tyre pressure Around town with lighter loads: 2.2bar (unloaded)
Permanent roofrack/ tent etc?: Yes

Canopy?:Yes
Other Mods?: No
CONSUMPTION: Around Town - 8km/l
Open Road (100km/h) - 8.2km/l

Re: The fuel consumption of my Hilux
Yes, that together with the tyre size / pressure could be responsible (wind resistance and rolling resistance).Kan my Frontrunner roofrack op die cab en die canopy so groot verskil maak?
These figures given tend to indicate just that ..... the open road figures are not much better than town or off-road. To me that very possibly indicates wind resistance at speeds, which are not so much a factor around town. On the open road there is no stop-start, working your way up and down through the gears, but mostly steady revs in high gear. This should give a 20 to 30% improvement over town driving, and you're not getting it.CONSUMPTION: Around Town - 8km/l
Open Road (100km/h) - 8.2km/l
Off road & Overlanding - 7.3 km/l
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Re: The fuel consumption of my Hilux
Thanks Andy,
Looking forward to the "new" canopy that I am purchasing from Mark to see if it does make a difference, as I understand no RR on that and then take it from there.
Are there any mechanical aspects that I could monitor or get checked to maybe decrease my consumption to at least get a 9km/l - 9.5km/l like the rest of the KZ-clan? The BosMerc has a FSH with Toyota.

Re: The fuel consumption of my Hilux
I'm totally dof when it comes to diesel motors , but other than to make sure that the air filter is clean and that there are no obstructions to airflow, I'm afraid that one of the oil burners will have to give you a few tips / pointers. Maybe the injectors need to be serviced / re-calibrated? Johann ("Toro Adventures") seems to be pretty clued up.

Re: The fuel consumption of my Hilux
Thanks Andy,
I did replace the injectors (just the jets) a couple of months ago, did not really make a difference.
Lets see if we can get some info from the boffins.

I'm averaging 7.5 - 8 kms/l I do get slightly better averages on the highway. It seems to do better at speeds around 100 km/hr. 120km/hr runs the RPM's up close to 3000 and I think it starts using more fuel.

My worst consumption was when I just got the 31" tyres and the canopy was on and I was in a hell of a hurry, I got 6.3km/l in town. Oops...
But she is still running like a new 2.7i.
I would like to get a new d4d but I will never be able to swop my 2.7i its a great 4x4. I am also still getting people to open their eyes when I am driving where it looked impossible. I love it!!

Do you have pics of your bakkie?
You have almost half `n mil km`s on your bakkie.
Do you still have the original engine in and did you have to replace anything up until now?
Well done!!

Re: The fuel consumption of my Hilux
Hi Werner,
Thanks Buddy, jip still the original motor, had a "disagreement" with a BMW X3 ly December, and so I replaced the bonnet, and front fenders with the facelift panels and a ARB bumper...
Apart from that it's been basically replacing tie rod ends, and ball joints, nothing on the engine.
Send me your e-mail addie, and I will mail you pics, for some reason, I struggle with the uploas on the forum!!
Cheers

Re: The fuel consumption of my Hilux
Hilux 2.2 4Y, 219000km, Brospeed Carb and manifold
Aluminium canopy, permanent roof racks, raised suspension, BFG A/T
Fuel consumption seems to stay around 6.6 km/l for urban and motorway (110km/h). I did manage 7.2 km/l once on dirt roads (90km/h). Does anyone know what to expect on overland trips (i.e. fully loaded, but travelling slower)? Also, the mixture "smells" rich - is self tuning a brospeed carb recommended/easy for improved fuel consumption?

Re: The fuel consumption of my Hilux
Just did a quick trip to the KNP, I tried to average between 100-110Km/hr, this had a massive effect on my fuel consumption. Normally I get about 7.1Km/L but travelling at that slightly slower speed the Hilux got 8.2Km/L. Thats about 15% better consumption. I may have to change my driving style.
Just because it says "4WD" doesn't make it an off-road vehicle.

Craig, the 4Y is "happiest" at that speed. Bulldog has 31" Cooper STT, raised suspension and EFI and that is the speed the vehicle seems to find itself in mostly. With 31" tyres on it is pretty much true GPS speed as well.
Best I go was around 7.8km/l as far as I can remember.

Re: The fuel consumption of my Hilux
Eric, the problem isn't the long distance driving, I can handle doing 110Km/hr. It's the Joburg traffic, well not when you are jammed up in it, but when you are gunning it to get to the correct lane, pass that truck, beat that robot, colse that gap sort of driving. That kills consumption. I find when I go on hoilday my driving is more chilled out. It shows by the consumption.
Just because it says "4WD" doesn't make it an off-road vehicle.

Re: The fuel consumption of my Hilux
I empathise with what you say about the traffic. This morning, here in Klerksdorp, I had to wait a full 20 seconds as the third car at the Stop street trying to cross a busy road, there must have been at least seven cars causing me to sweat it out. This was during peak traffic at 7:30AM this morning.
I am thinking of relocating to a smaller town.
Seriously, I was Joh'burg born & bred, but can never see myself ever getting used to that kind of traffic again. You have my utmost sympathies with that.

You are lucky, but having said that, I work flexitime, basically more flexi then time so avoid the worst of the traffic. So there are many lemmings worse then me.

Just back from a long weekend in Tanzania's Mikumi Nat'l Park. Averaged 8.7km/l consumption over the 400km trip. About 90km was on packed dirt road within the park at 20-40km/hr. Thanks to local police I rarely went over 110km/hr on the tar road.

So 80km was grondpad.
