Okkie's Aluminium Canopy

Post by Okkie Van Wyk »

Here is the start of my aluminum canopy.
I toke some photos and will post them as we go along .

Ok I decided to go with the soft lines for the shape instead of the more square approach.
And asked a friend of mine whom is a specialist in aluminum to help with the design, and building. We made a template for the front and rear and for the roof part we used a 1.5m X 2.3m checker plate 3mm thick. The side doors will be cut out and a door sill welded in for the doors , same with the rear door that will be a half door. The roof part was rolled in a plate-roller to the correct shape and the front and rear will be welded to it. There is no frame as the roof and side panels are made out of one plate. Door cut outs are used to make the doors and the roof part will be strengthened with 3 aluminum channels. I got the same locks and hinges that Pieter and Niel used on their canopies

Here are some photos of the start and the canopy tacked together so long. Will post some more as the project takes shape.

Nope just keeping it as it is no paint/powder-coat or anodi-dinges . Just as it is
Think the Alu look is just fine.

Looking good Okkie.

Do you not think that by not painting or anodising it you will get more oxidation over the years?

Annodising
MANUFACTURING | ANODIZING | SIGNAGEAnodised Aluminium | Serial Plates| Labels & SignsCuspal Manufacturers guarantee quality products and we strive to perfect our client services. All manufacturing, anodising and printing processes are performed in house to enable us to manufacture aluminium products to your exact specifications and maximise quality control. The Cuspal range of processes and products are constantly extended to meet our customers needs. This enables us to give the you a complete product service and respond rapidly to changing market needs.

Aluminium can be anodised in many different colours, silver is most common but other colours are available. Common thicknesses range from 0.5mm - 3.0mm thick. Anodised products and components are used in thousands of commercial, industrial and consumer applications and Cuspal manufacture a vast range of products from anodised aluminium such as: Poles & Handles, Rack Plates, Signs, Labels, Serial Plates, Name Plates, Door Signs, Plaques, Identification Tags, Control Panel Labels & Facia Panels. The unique anodised finish is the only one in the metals industry that satisfies each of the following important factors:

Durability
Because anodising is an integral bond to the underlying aluminium extrusion, it is will not peel or chip, and its physical and chemical structure makes it very resistant to abrasion and corrosion, giving it a long life span.
Colourfastness
The colour compounds used for the dying of aluminium make colour anodising very stable. Anodised aluminium will not materially fade, chip, peel or chalk even under the harshest UV conditions.
Low Maintenance
Scratches, scars and wear from fabrication, handling, installation, frequent surface dirt cleaning and usage are virtually non-existent.
Aesthetics
Anodising offers a large increasing number of gloss and colour alternatives and minimises or eliminates colour variations. Unlike other finishes, anodising allows the aluminium to maintain its metallic appearance.
Value
A lower initial finishing cost combines with lower maintenance costs for greater long-term value.

Okkie, dit kom is veskilende kleure soos silver greys en lyk nes die alu look. Doen 'n search op 'anodizing aluminium' jy sal baie informasie kry.

Groete

This is very nice Okkie. I like your design. What took the longest with our canopies was the cutting and welding of the frame. With your design you minimized the cutting and welding time. Also by using one sheet you also minimize the possibility of a leaking roof.

I see the last post was 4 Sept, I am sure by now you must have finished it?

Okay as promised here is an update on the progress
The side and rear doors were cut in today
Canopy_3.jpg
Canopy_4.jpg

The door frames and door sides were cut and bent
The front end (Cab side) is cut at an angle to close the gap between the cab and the canopy
Canopy_1.jpg
Canopy_2.jpg

Now the door frames and door sides need to be cut to size and then the big weld starts
Will keep you up to date

:( Sadly this project was abandoned because of a :aggresive: difference of opinion between myself and the alu-welder/person whom I had an agreement with for building the canopy. No losses to either of us , I kept my old frontrunner steel canopy and he now sports a aluminum canopy based on the shape of mine. Needles to say I think that this was his plan from the day that the alu-canopy started to take shape and he decided it would look :beta: on his Lux than mine. :disgust: We have ended our general communication as well :disgust:

Maybe next time
