Stuck drain plug
Hi I've been replacing all the lubricant in my bakkie as part of its service. I've gotten stuck (literally) with the drain plug on the rear diff. I cannot get it to move, not one little bit. All the others have loosened with some persuasion (big spanner ;-) ) and penetrating lubricant, except that o...

Re: Ants - Ants - Ants!!!!!!
My grandfather, a mechanical engineer loved building things in his spare time, came up the ultimate ant trap. It consisted of a 5L galvanized paint/oil tin with the lid removed. Inside the tin he mounted a shaft sticking up from the center of the bottom. On top of the shaft was a small triangular pl...

Re: Accident - how strong is the Hilux?
Very nasty A friend of mine wrote off his mom's Merc on that sharp hairpin, a truck had broken down just out of sight around the corner in the innermost lane. He didn't see it until just before he hit it. No warning triangle or anything deployed. Those overhead signs weren't there yet (~8 years ago)...

I know there is a sign with pictures of a bottle with the words H2O on it, but I think there should be a clear signs saying "If you do not have at least 1 litre of water per person and if you do not wear proper hiking shoes, DO NOT even consider walking up this road." Hi there We have tri...

Hi You would be amazed by the incredible numbers of people who head up Platteklip with no food, water, hats or sunscreen and in plakkies or other totally useless footwear. Thus far this year we have rescued about 5 or 6 people overcome with heat stroke/dehydration just in Platteklip. If you are look...

Re: Replacing the harness
Busy checking the earth connections as I go along. I believe the reason that I may be having issues with the lights is because the previous owner(s?) at some point wired the park light relay into the indicator circuit  which may be part of the problem. No I have no idea why they did this....

Hi there My bakkie was the victim of some affirmative shopping recently and they took the radio/cd player. I want to replace it but I'm not a big fan of the "removable face" style of radio (It is always such a pain to deal with, where do you put it? Unless you have a man-bag... ) SO ...

Correct battery for a '97 Hilux
Hi I took my battery in to be replaced today because it was really old and tired. I had a 635 in it, when I got to the motor spares place the sales assistant and I checked in the catalog to make sure about which battery to replace it with. Apparently it should be a 646. So I bought a 646. When I got...

Thanks I'll try them.
For 2k I'd expect it to be made of a gold/platinum alloy or something.
Maybe I'll just buy that replacement engine... Get lots of spares that way!

Waterpump/alternator crankshaft pulley
Hi The waterpump/alternator drive pulley (Part No 13470 35020) mounted on the crankshaft on my 22R needs replacing. The "stealers" have given me a quote of R2123.60. Which is ridiculous! I can buy a 2nd hand engine with less kilos on it for not much more than double that. How on earth can ...

Hi My "new" bakkie was the victim of some affirmative shopping before I bought it, they removed the quarter-light and its surrounding rubber (why they bothered, I'm not sure because the right rear door doesn't lock) losing the rubber in the process. Does anyone have an idea as to where I c...

Thanks to everyone for their replies. It is all moot anyway, the seller was running a scam, the chassis had been welded and straightened following an accident. Bastard!

Wow, thanks for all the help and not flaming the noob  So to summarize (if I have this right...): 4Y aint so bad after all, slow on roads though. To get better on road performance = engine mod/EFI which is about R15-20k, and lose some of the "repair with a leatherman, duct tape and blo...

4Y to diesel or something else
Hi there This is my first post on this forum, so please excuse any noob mistakes... I've found a great deal on a 1990 2.2 4Y 4x4 Hilux, but from what I can gather the 4Y is really thirsty and doesn't really have enough power. So my question is: Would it be a good idea to replace the 4Y with another ...
